Né aux États-Unis, ce phénomène de concentration de la production de richesses dans de très grandes agglomérations a gagné la France au cours des dernières décennies et l’a profondément transformée. Pierre Vermeren retrace les étapes de cette nouvelle organisation du territoire autour de ses principaux pôles urbains. Mais l’objet de son livre est surtout d’alerter sur les retombées négatives de cette évolution. Elle a conduit à une éviction des classes moyennes et populaires des métropoles, renvoyées dans une « France périphérique » appauvrie. La crise des Gilets jaunes a mis en lumière les dommages démocratiques de cette partition sociale et territoriale. Encore faut-il leur ajouter les dégâts écologiques causés par le béton-roi, la démultiplication des infrastructures nécessaires à l’approvisionnement et au fonctionnement des métropoles et l’usage massif de l’automobile imposé à leur périphérie. Le bilan sans complaisance de ces effets délétères de toute nature mène à une conclusion sans ambages : la métropolisation est une impasse. Il n’est que temps de remettre en chantier une vision plus équilibrée de l’aménagement du territoire.

Mais le changement de vocabulaire n'est qu'une étape vers une gestion plus intégrée de territoires aux tensions très fortes du fait des pratiques de mobilité, en leur sein, comme à leur périphérie. Very few people recognize, however, that these questions are more than a century old. The Cycling City is a sharp history of the bicycle’s rise and fall in the late nineteenth century. In the 1890s, American cities were home to more cyclists, more cycling infrastructure, more bicycle friendly legislation, and a richer cycling culture than anywhere else in the world. Evan Friss unearths the hidden history of the cycling city, demonstrating that diverse groups of cyclists managed to remap cities with new roads, paths, and laws, challenge social conventions, and even dream up a new urban ideal inspired by the bicycle. When cities were chaotic and filthy, bicycle advocates imagined an improved landscape in which pollution was negligible, transportation was silent and rapid, leisure spaces were democratic, and the divisions between city and country were blurred. Friss argues that when the utopian vision of a cycling city faded by the turn of the century, its death paved the way for today’s car-centric cities—and ended the prospect of a true American cycling city ever being built.

Despite being home to the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia exists on the periphery of an Islamic world centered around the Arabian Peninsula. Mirjam Lücking approaches the problem of interpreting the current conservative turn in Indonesian Islam by considering the ways personal relationships, public discourse, and matters of religious self-understanding guide two groups of Indonesians who actually travel to the Arabian Peninsula—labor migrants and Mecca pilgrims—in becoming physically mobile and making their mobility meaningful. This concept, which Lücking calls "guided mobility," reveals that changes in Indonesian Islamic traditions are grounded in domestic social constellations and calls claims of outward Arab influence in Indonesia into question. With three levels of comparison (urban and rural areas, Madura and Central Java, and migrants and pilgrims), this ethnographic case study foregrounds how different regional and socioeconomic contexts determine Indonesians' various engagements with the Arab world.
